What Just Happened? is a devastating comedy of appalling Hollywood manners. It puts the boot into poncy art-house directors, and charts the tantrums of overpaid stars. The story, based on the memoirs of the fictional creator Art Linson, is so irrational that it rings alarmingly true.
Robert De Niro is a middle-aged studio executive whose livelihood hangs at near a thread. The art-house magnum opus that De Niro has commissioned for the purpose the Cannes Coat Festival is a future $25 million disaster. His refrigerated boss, Catherine Keener, wants to save $15 million of unsatisfactory sip by malicious the barmy climax where a dog has its brains blown faulty next to the stiff of Sean Penn. The enraged British headman (Michael Wincott) smashes up the department furniture and gobbles perilous quantities of pills.
De Niro is a grumpy marvel as the Scheming smoothie whose bank account and wellbeing are tragically shackled to the whims of self-obsessed divas. He casually bins a thrilling manuscript about a florist alongside Scott Solomon (Stanley Tucci) until he discovers the same of the penny-a-liner’s socks out of sight his ex-wife’s bed. The anger is wonderfully bottled.
