You may find yourself underwhelmed by Grow Your Own. Ten years on from The Full Monty and still they're trying to duplicate the quirky-underdog-comedy-meets-social-realist-England that nobody has managed half so well since. This time it's an allotment in an unspecified quarter of Merseyside where a bunch of middle-aged geezers find companionship in digging, planting and moaning to each other about the state of the nation.
When a handful of asylum-seekers show up to occupy a couple of plots it causes predictable ructions among the longtime holders, principally the Little Englander chairman Big John (Philip Jackson), whose low-level racism and high-level self-interest pave the way to calamity.
The writer Frank Cottrell Boyce is too eager to make his characters heartwarming, at the expense of their being individual. His trio of grumpy old men are intended to satirise conformity and contrariness, but they sound like contenders for Last of the Summer Wine: The Next Generation. The forces of darkness are represented by a rapacious sales exec from a mobile-phone company and an immigration officer, who make their appearances like stage villains.
