"I LUST, therefore I am." These words are a fair paraphrase of David Kepesh's guiding mantra. A divorced New York college professor in his 60s, he is no longer interested in love - if he ever was. All he needs to ignite the spark which fuels his emotional life is sex.
And he knows how to get it. Smooth and cultured, with a certain fame bestowed by regular television appearances, he is an experienced womaniser. He prefers younger women but passion does not preclude practicality. Aware of the dangers of sexual harassment charges for any academic rash enough to go after a student, he waits until final examinations are over and papers marked. Then he gives a party, where he makes his move.
Kepesh is the creation of Philip Roth, who has devoted a trilogy to him. The last book in the series, The Dying Animal, is the basis for this unexpectedly seductive film from the Spanish director Isabel Coixet ( My Life Without Me) who has tenderised Kepesh considerably while leaving him his candour which verges on the brutal, and his narcissism which has kept him safely insulated from intimacy for most of his life.
