Wendy and Lucy is spot on the obliging of film made for MOVING PICTURE CRITICS. It’s a overlay, perhaps, that at best a FLICKS CRITIC could verily love — lollygagging, dreary, tediously grim, thoughtful of aimless, but ultimately impelling, that is, if you haven’t already been moved old hat of your site and into a theater with a louder, more meaningless but less tiring integument connected with a dog that absolutely does sting it in the end. Lead, for instance, Lisa Schwarzbaum, who LOVED Wendy and Lucy, and she should positive! She’s an troublesome, self-important blatherer who is growing down with pop-culture’s Titanic, Enjoyment Weekly (and the destitute better half’s pre-eminent is being pushed into the tone down by a million tweenery twatwaffles trying to arrest afloat around using her fuselage as a lifeboat). I take for granted, too, that the FILM CRITIC function of my intellect appreciated Wendy and Lucy; unfortunately, the side of my wisdom that wanted to be entertained or enlightened or touched a moment ago kept poking the FILM CRITIC imply of my perspicacity with a smart guy and yelling, “When is something universal to happen? I execrate you. Why did you bear to be a silent picture critic? You suck. I fancy you die.”
It’s hard to characterize Wendy and Lucy; it’s too modest, non-standard real, to be pretentious, and lacks the requisite quirky characters to make eligible as a winsome indie flick. It’s not a unexpected study, a relationship dramaturgy, or a slice-of-life haziness, either. It’s just friendly of one of those films where bigwig walks throughout, stares visible windows, and looks at trees, and bigwig else with a camera follows behind filming the woman walking all over, staring out windows, and looking at trees.
