Garnering merited comparisons to the Italian neorealists, Bahrani—here and in 2006’s Homo sapiens Push Barrow—has turned his camera on Stylish York’s employment classify, chronicling a life at once instantly recognizable and out-and-out marginalized. In Chop Department store, the hero is Ale (strong “Ah-lay,” played nigh Polanco), a callow teen who lives in the shadow of Shea Hippodrome without parents or rules; he rents a closet-size apartment with his sister (Gonzales), whose puzzling takings, he eventually learns, comes from prostitution. Armed with baby but attitude, Ale scrapes gone a bare-knuckle being; he sells sweetmeats on the underground railway and steals hubcaps, bartering them to the chop boutique where he every so often helps with polishing. The shop’s proprietor—played by means of Barrow’s Razvi—serves as a clarify of mentor.
Much as Move’s byway someone's cup of tea vendor axiom his coffee stand as a ticket to the American Dream, so Ale in the long run invests the whole kit he has in a beat-up victuals truck, which he plans to turn into a well-paying business. If Chop Shop lacks the earlier overlay’s surreal, predawn allusion, its snapshot of group mobility at its most molasses-paced is startlingly real. With his abundance of pluck and deficit of lore, Ale finds that adults purpose treat him—or cheat him—well-founded as they would a grown-up. This isn’t a silent picture hither his resilience, but simply his existence. It makes you eager to mark which neighborhood Bahrani intention train his eye on next.
